South Africa - Stage 6/6: Johannesburg

JOBURG is exciting, bubbly and full of culturual activities I was led to believe when reading guidebooks. Well, maybe it is or was, but I didn't feel much when we got there. Maybe it was a mistake to visit JOBURG at the end of an amazing trip, full of memories of the most wonderful landscapes and after having been to lovely CAPE TOWN. Maybe we should have visited it earlier and not as closure, because that way it was meant to lose against all that we've seen.
JOBURG, wie JOHANNESBURG auch genannt wird, soll aufregend, pulsierend und voll von kulturellen Aktivitäten sein - jedenfalls glaubt man das leicht wenn man die enthusiastischen Berichte in Reiseführern liest. Ich empfand es leider nicht so. Möglicherweise hätten wir JOBURG nicht zum Abschluss besuchen sollen, denn mit den traumhaften Landschaften und Erlebnissen, welche unser Roadtrip uns bis dato beschert hatte, kann die Stadt nicht mithalten.

The Apartheid Museum is interesting and good, we stayed in a B&B in the heart of SOWETO TOWNSHIP, which, in that particular area around Vilakazi street, isn't that dangerous to walk around. Don't however go and explore neither township on your own, book one of the many tour offers instead.
Das Apartheid Museum ist zu empfehlen, weil interessant und untrennbar mit der Geschichte Südafrikas verbunden. Wir haben in einem B&B im Herzen SOWETOS übernachtet, wo es rund um die Vilakazi Street auch recht sicher ist. Aber geht bitte nicht allein auf Entdeckungstour, sondern bucht eine von vielen angebotenen Touren durchs Viertel (Viertel ist auch untertrieben: es wohnen 4 Mio. Menschen in Soweto).

Sorry to say, JOBURG didn't impress me, but I'm happy to visit it again with a local one day who shows me where to go. 
I wasn't too sad about it though - SOUTH AFRICA left me with a lot of lovely travel memories and has sooooooo many beautiful places to see and things to do! I can only recommend going there, spend at least 2,5 weeks there if you want to do the Cape region and Kruger, better 3 weeks if you have the time.
Schade, dass ich sagen muss dass mich JOBURG kalt gelassen hat, aber ich würde es mit einem Einheimischen nochmal besuchen, um vielleicht vom Expertenwissen profitieren zu können. Ist aber auch nicht weiter schlimm, denn SÜDAFRIKA hatte soooooooooo viel zu bieten und ich bin mit einem ganzen Sack an schönen Erinnerungen wieder nach Hause geflogen, von denen ich noch immer zehre! Ich empfehle mindestens 2,5 Wochen, besser 3, wenn Ihr sowohl die Kapregion als auch den Krüger Park mitnehmen wollt.
