Cannes - a short trip

CANNES is famous for hosting CANNES INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, one of the most important film festivals, every year. Dozens of Hollywood stars come to the CROISETTE and cause quite a buzz. 
During the rest of the year though, the PALAIS DES FESTIVALS is home to many a commercial trade fair. This is also the reason why I get to go to CANNES once a year in November. I usually spend 3 nights there which means 3 occasions for an excellent dinner! I'm going to share with you my favourite places and also some other tipps if you happen to be in the area for your vacation and have time to see some of the region around!

CANNES ist bekannt für das alljährlich stattfindende FILMFESTIVAL, welches regelmäßig Dutzende von Hollywoodstars anzieht.
Das restliche Jahr hinweg wird der PALAIS DES FESTIVALS für Messen oder Kongresse genutzt, das ist auch der Grund, weshalb ich jedes Jahr im November für 3 Nächte nach CANNES fliege - 3 Gelegenheiten für ein ausgezeichnetes Abendessen! Ich verrate Euch meine Lieblingsadressen und ein paar weitere Tipps, die hilfreich sind wenn Ihr ebenfalls geschäftlich nach Cannes reist, oder das Glück habt, in der Region ein paar Ferientage verbringen zu können.


ACCOMODATION - UNTERKUNFT
Forget about RITZ CARLTON. We tried it (to make a dream come true) but we were very disappointed with what we got for the expensive rates - small rooms, old, shabby furniture, atmosphere in the lobby makes you think you're at a train station.
I'd recommend to either get an appartment (around the old harbour area for example) or, if you prefer a hotel and are willing to pay for a 5 star one, visit FIVE SEAS HOTEL. This design hotel is situated just a 2 minute walk from the main entrance of PALAIS DES FESTIVALS and offers huge, clean rooms and excellent service. You're greeted with a hand-written letter and some of the finest MACARONS upon arrival and will find that this is a great place to relax after a day packed with exhausting meetings.

Vergesst das RITZ CARLTON. Ist keine Reise wert. Wir haben es getestet, weil wir unbedingt mal hinwollten und waren sehr enttäuscht - die Zimmer sind winzig und abgenutzt - für den Preis hatte ich mehr erwartet und in der Lobby ging es zu wie auf einem Bahnhof. 
Nehmt Euch entweder ein Appartment rund um den alten Hafen, oder - wenn Ihr bereit seid, ein 5 Sterne Hotel in Cannes zu bezahlen - übernachtet im FIVE SEAS HOTEL. Das Boutique Hotel ist nur ein paar Schritte vom PALAIS entfernt und hat riesige, saubere und moderne Zimmer und bietet einen ausgezeichneten Service. Bei Ankunft wartet ein handgeschriebener Brief und ein paar Macarons und Ihr werdet schnell feststellen, dass das FIVE SEAS ein tollerOrt ist, um nach einem anstrengenden Tag voll Meetings zu entspannen.

EAT & DRINK - ESSEN & TRINKEN
For breakfast you have the option to enjoy the excellent buffet of FIVE SEAS HOTEL, situated on the roof terrace. As a cheaper option I recommend the freshly baked chocolate croissants at the little café in RUE DES BELGES, just around the corner - they serve excellent Italian coffee as well!
For dinner I have three recommendations for you:
1.) LA CAVE in BOULEVARD DE LA REPUBLIQUE. Try duck with honey sauce or a steak. To die for. Excellent wine selection. 
2.) LE CAVEAU 30 in RUE FELIX FAURE. Go for a huge seafood platter if you're a party of 3 or more or try the fish of the day. Good white wines.
3.) FRED L'ECAILLER. Go outside with FRED (you will recognize him) and choose your fish. Have it in a crust of salt. Excellent. This restaurant is a little off-site at PLAC DE L'ETANG, so take a taxi and make sure the driver comes to pick you up later - don't let FRED's cousin drive you...
Mind you - none of the above is "cheap" - in all these years I haven't managed to find a cheap restaurant in Cannes which is central and not far to walk. But all of the above are a guarantee for a delicious dinner with your work mates or clients... or for a special evening during your holiday.

Zum Frühstück bietet sich entweder die Dachterrasse des Hotels an - ausgezeichnetes Buffet - oder die erheblich günstigere Variante in Form eines kleinen Cafés auf der RUE DES BELGES, direkt um die Ecke. Hier gibt es frische Schokocroissants und ausgezeichneten italienischen Kaffee.
Fürs Abendessen habe ich einige Empfehlungen:
1.) LA CAVE im BOULEVARD DE LA REPUBLIQUE. Unbedingt Ente mit Honigsauce probieren, oder Steak. Umwerfend. Ausgezeichnete Weinauswahl.
2.) LE CAVEAU 30 in der RUE FELIX FAURE. Wenn Ihr mindestens zu dritt seid, teilt Euch eine der riesigen Meeresfrüchteplatten oder den Tagesfang. 
3.) FRED L'ECAILLER. Draußen vor dem Restaurant könnt Ihr mit FRED (leicht zu erkennen) den Fisch aussuchen. Am besten in Salzkruste zubereiten lassen. Ausgezeichnet. Das Restaurant ist ein wenig abseits, also nehmt ein Taxi und vereinbart mit dem Fahrer, dass er Euch später wieder abholt. Lasst Euch nicht von FREDs Cousin fahren...
Damit wir uns richtig verstehen - keine der genannten Adressen ist "günstig" - in all den Jahren, die ich nach Cannes komme, konnte ich noch kein zentral gelegenes, gutes Restaurant entdecken. Aber alle oben aufgeführten Restaurants sind von hoher Qualität und perfekt für einen Abend mit Kollegen oder Kunden... oder für einen besonderen Abend während des Urlaubs... 

HOW TO SPEND YOUR LUNCH BREAK - MITTAGSPAUSE
If you're in CANNES for work, you will most probably not have a lot of leisure time, I recommend spending your 30mins for a walk around the old harbour or for enjoying a sandwich on the CROISETTE. A good sandwich shop is CITRONELLE, situated on RUE BIVOUAC NAPOLEON where you can also get taboulé and fresh juices.

Wenn Ihr zum Arbeiten in CANNES seid, werdet Ihr nicht viel Zeit für Sightseeing haben, drum empfehle ich, Eure Mittagspause für einen kleinen Spaziergang um den alten Hafen zu nutzen, oder um auf der CROISETTE ein Sandwich zu essen. Ein guter Sandwichladen ist das CITRONELLE auf der RUE BIVOUAC NAPOLEON, wo man auch Taboulé und frisch gepresste Säfte bekommt.

WHAT TO BRING HOME - MITBRINGSEL
Macarons. Provided your journey home doesn't take longer than a day - you should really eat them fresh. Go for the best and buy your set of macarons at PATISSERIE INTUITIONS - the chef has been the youngest ever to become world champion of confectionery in 2009! My favourites are pistachio and rose!

Macarons sind ein tolles Mitbringsel, vorausgesetzt die Heimreise dauert nicht länger als einen Tag - sie sollten frisch gegessen werden. Die besten Macarons bekommt man bei PATISSERIE INTUITIONS - der Konditormeister wurde 2009 zum Weltmeister gekürt. Meine Favoriten sind Pistazie und Rose!

WHERE TO SPEND MORE FREE TIME - AUSFLUGSZIELE
Lucky you if you have time to enjoy some of the region around Cannes! I recommend:
1.) ANTIBES. Lovely ancient city with city walls around. Liked the dinner at LE SAFRANIER and sitting on the city wall and listen to the gentle waves.
2.) NICE. Hectic and touristy, but I loved the flair of the old town and its markets. Make sure to try some beer or olive ice cream at FENOCCHIO!
3.) ST. PAUL DE VENCE. This little gem is hidden in the hills, the drive there is worth it! No cars are allowed in the old part of the town, from the city walls, where locals meet in the evening and bring their own wine, you have an amazing view over the coastline. CAFE DE LA PLACE is an institution.
4.) GRASSE. Where fragrances are developped and you can even visit a seminar.
5.) MONACO. In case CANNES wasn't expensive enough yet, haha!

1.) ANTIBES. Wunderschöne Altstadt mit erhaltener Stadtmauer. Tolles Abendessen im LE SAFRANIER.
2.) NIZZA. Hektisch und touristisch, aber trotzdem mochte ich den Flair der Altstadt mit den engen Gassen und den Märkten. Unbedingt das Biereis oder Oliveneis im FENOCCHIO probieren!
3.) ST. PAUL DE VENCE. Ein kleines Juwel in den Hügeln hinter Nizza. Die Fahrt lohnt sich! In der Altstadt sind keine Autos zugelassen, von der Stadtmauer hat man einen tollen Blick über die Küstenlinie. Die Locals treffen sich hier abends auf ein Glas selbst mitgebrachten Wein. Das CAFE DE LA PLACE ist eine Institution.
4.) GRASSE. Parfumhauptstadt, in der man auch Seminare belegen kann.
5.) MONACO. Falls Euch CANNES noch nicht teuer genug war, haha!
