South Africa is called 'Rainbow Nation' with good reason.
Africas southernmost country offers a wide range to its visitors: nature, climate, population, culture. Unfortunately, there's also a wide range of social standards and privileges among the people of South Africa. Actually it is not so much a range as two extremes: the discrepancy between the rich and the poor is very big and correlates embarassingly often with one's skin colour.
Against all scepticism I've always experienced South Africa as a very safe destination - I've never felt threatened or uncomfortable.
The country is an amazing place to visit and I warmly recommend to rent a car to be able to experience all of the beautiful spots in a truly individual way.
My journey took me from Cape Town via Franschhoek to the Garden Route and Oudtshoorn. From George I flew to Joburg - from there I drove to Sabie and Kruger National Park area.
I will tell you about my journey in different stages and will also share the secret gems that we've found along the way.
I hope you will enjoy my comments - I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Ein Nachmittag in Barcelona // Barcelona in one day
Ever since I've watched "L'auberge espagnole - The Spanish Apartment" I've wanted to go and visit that vibrant city and when I finally did I fell in love! Recently I've had an appointment in Barcelona which allowed me to spend another afternoon in Catalonia's capital - another day trip and a convenient opportunity to escape from winter in Central Europe.

If you only have a little time to spend I recommend taking one of the sightseeing buses. For real! I always do that when I first visit a city to get an overview and to allow myself some time to really arrive. Most lines will pass PLACA CATALUNYA, you'll get an overview of all lines here.

If you prefer to dive into the city straight away I think there's no betterbplace to do so than EL BORN, a lovely and picturesque area, where you have amazing cafés and tapas bars, boutiques and galleries - here you'll get some of the "real" Barcelona, so don't tell anyone! ;)

I especially recommend SAGARDI EUSKAL TABERNA to enjoy some delicious tapas. They look like art and they taste lovely! And it's really not expensive!

Who wants to visit Barcelona and not see the beach?! Go to PASSEIG MARE NOSTRUM, you can either enjoy some lovely paella by the esplanade, or go to a supermarket and buy some nice tapas to enjoy them directly on the beach. There are also some Mojito vendors so what more can you possibly ask for?

If you're among the lucky ones who have more time to spend in Barcelona of course you should visit SAGRADA FAMILIA, PARK GÜELL and EL EIXAMPLE - if you're up for some architecture that is... BARRI GOTIC is for everyone who likes really old buildings and EL RAVAL is the perfect place for your night out.... !PASALO BIEN!

Ein Nachmittag in Venedig // Venice in one day
Venice - my first visit ever. My job allows me to spend an afternoon and night in this ancient Italian city... from airport Marco Polo I hopped on the orange Vaporetto becaues it will take me through CANALE GRANDE into the heart of Venice.
I'm mesmerized by the colourful facades that seem to pop out of the lagoon... I feel like in Disneyland so unreal is the beauty of Venice's old buildings...
At Rialto bridge I leave the water taxi and mingle with the crowd of tourists - a big crowd even twowards the end of October... diverting into a random alley, away from the main artery to PIAZZA SAN MARCO I already get to see another, much quieter Venice.
I'm conciously roaming around and divert into contorted alleyways which rewards me with serendipities like PALAZZO CONTARINI DEL BOCOLO, an architectural jewel. Of course I find myself wandering towards PIAZZA SAN MARCO in the end, crossing many bridges and climbing and descending a numberof steps... who could possibly visit Venice and not see this fascinating place? It comes with the highest concentration of tourists and pidgeons, but still is fantastic to look at with its impressive buildings.
My expedition leads me towards Ghetto / Cannaregio... by no means is this area what we understand as ghetto! It is a quieter area and the air is filled with the delicious scent of home-cooked pasta.
After a long afternoon I return to Campo Manin to check into my hotel for the night.
Early next morning I walk down to pier San Marco and wait for the blue water taxi which will bring me back to Marco Polo airport via Lido and Murano, home to the art of glas blowing.
The sun rises behind Lido and bathes Isola di San Giorgio in a warm, golden light - a truly magical moment... Venice, I will return...
